STABILITY WORKSHOP DETAILS

Focusing on our theme of stability, the "Stability and Somatic Strength: Healing the Healers Through Body-Based DBT and Grounding Practices," workshop will explore essential modality skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness-based practices. Together, we will enhance your therapeutic toolkit.

Hour 1: Understanding Secondary Trauma in Therapists

  • Definitions: Vicarious trauma, burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress

  • Impact on body and nervous system

  • Recognizing personal signs of trauma overload

  • Group reflection & check-in

Hour 4: Breath and the Body – Somatic Practices for Regulation

  • The role of breath in nervous system regulation

  • Techniques: Box breathing, 4-7-8, diaphragmatic breathing

  • Body scan and muscle relaxation

  • Embodied self-awareness activity

Hour 7: Distress Tolerance Skills for Helpers

  • DBT’s STOP, TIPP, and ACCEPTS skills

  • Using distress tolerance to prevent reactivity

  • Practice: Cold water + paced breathing

  • Roleplay: Using skills during moments of activation

Hour 10: Building a Somatic Self-Compassion Practice

  • Self-compassion and interoception

  • Touch and affirmation in healing (e.g., hand over heart, self-hug)

  • Practice: “Compassionate Body Scan”

  • Group share: resistance and acceptance in compassion work

Hour 2: Nervous System 101 – Polyvagal Theory in Practice

  • Overview of the autonomic nervous system

  • Introduction to Polyvagal Theory (ventral vagal, sympathetic, dorsal vagal states)

  • Mapping your nervous system states

  • Somatic tracking exercise

Hour 5: Introduction to Somatic Body Work

  • What is somatic therapy?

  • Techniques: Movement, touch awareness, tension release

  • Practice: Pendulation and resourcing (Somatic Experiencing concepts)

  • Safety and scope for non-body therapists

Hour 8: Emotion Regulation for Therapists

  • Understanding emotional vulnerability and reactivity

  • The role of self-care in regulation

  • Building mastery and positive emotional experiences

  • Practice: Opposite Action and PLEASE skills

Hour 11: Boundaries and Body Awareness

  • Somatic cues of boundary violation

  • Practice: Visualizing and feeling physical and energetic boundaries

  • Techniques: Anchoring, posture work

  • Roleplay: Saying no with body and voice

Hour 3: Grounding Techniques for Daily Use

  • Sensory grounding, orientation, and present-moment awareness

  • External vs. internal grounding

  • Creating a personal “Grounding Menu”

  • Practice: 5-4-3-2-1 and object grounding

Hour 6: Mindfulness & DBT: Core Concepts

  • Definitions and goals of mindfulness in DBT

  • Observing, describing, and participating

  • Mindfulness of current emotion

  • Practice: Mindful eating or walking

Hour 9: Integrating Movement and Stillness

  • The power of movement in trauma release

  • Gentle body-based practices: shaking, stretching, yoga-inspired grounding

  • Stillness as safety: learning to pause

  • Practice: Grounded movement sequence

Hour 12: Integration and Embodied Resilience

  • Review of core skills and concepts

  • Creating a personal somatic toolkit

  • Practice: Create a daily ritual of grounding and regulation

  • Reflection: What have I learned about my body and healing?
